Tipasa release notes, 21 July 2026
Release Date: July 21, 2026
Applies to: Tipasa and Resource Sharing for Groups libraries with Patron Management
Introduction
Borrowing libraries can now control when the Renew button appears to patrons in My Account. New settings in Service Configuration let you define a renewal window based on the patron due date — how many days before and after the due date patrons may request a renewal. The system also hides the Renew button when a renewal is already pending or has been denied, with clearer messaging for patrons in My Account.
This release applies to loan requests only, and only when Allow patrons to renew ILL requests online is selected in Patron Settings. If that setting is off, patron renewal behavior is unchanged and the new configuration options are not displayed.
Staff renewal behavior in the Staff Interface is unchanged. Staff can continue to request renewals according to existing rules, including for overdue items and outside the patron renewal window.

New features and enhancements
Better control of the Renew button in My Account
What's new
When Allow patrons to renew ILL requests online is selected, you can now configure when the Renew button appears to patrons in My Account:
- Days before patron's due date — Set how many days before the patron due date (1–30) the Renew button becomes available, or leave the default so the button appears as soon as your library has received the item (current behavior)
- Days after patron's due date — Set how many days after the patron due date (1–30) the Renew button remains available, or leave the default so the button disappears once the patron due date has passed (current behavior)
The Renew button is also hidden from patrons when:
- A renewal request is already pending a lender response
- A previous renewal attempt was denied by the lender
- The current date is outside your configured renewal window (too soon or too late)
When the Renew button is not available, patrons see a message in My Account explaining why — for example, that a renewal is already pending, that a renewal was denied, that it is too soon to renew, or that it is too late to renew.
Why this matters
Libraries manage renewals differently. Some want patrons to wait until closer to the due date before requesting a renewal; others allow renewals for recently overdue items. Without configuration, every library shared the same renewal button behavior.
This change helps you:
- Reduce unnecessary renewal requests to lenders
- Prevent duplicate renewal requests while one is pending
- Avoid repeated requests after a lender has denied a renewal
- Reduce requests from patrons to request renewals for recently overdue items on their behalf
- Make the renewal process more transparent to patrons through clearer messaging in My Account
How it works
The new settings appear in Service Configuration → WorldShare Interlibrary Loan → Patron Settings, in the Patron Request Management section, when Allow patrons to renew ILL requests online is selected.
Days before patron's due date
- Select a number from 1 to 30 to control when the Renew button first appears
- Select Default to keep current behavior: the Renew button appears as soon as your library has received the item
- You cannot select both a specific number of days and the default at the same time
Days after patron's due date
- Select a number from 1 to 30 to keep the Renew button available after the patron due date has passed
- Select Default to keep current behavior: the Renew button disappears once the patron due date has passed
Calculations use the patron due date — the due date displayed to the patron in My Account.
Informational text on the Patron Settings screen also reminds staff that patrons cannot submit another renewal while one is pending, and cannot request a renewal after a previous attempt was denied.
Processing summary:
| Situation | Renew button in My Account |
|---|---|
| Item received; within configured days-before window (or default) | Shown |
| Before configured days-before window | Hidden — "Too soon to renew." |
| After patron due date, within configured days-after window | Shown (if days-after is configured) |
| After configured days-after window (or default after due date) | Hidden — "Too late to renew. Please return item." |
| Renewal request pending | Hidden — "A renewal request is already pending." |
| Renewal previously denied | Hidden — "Renewal is denied." |
What your patrons will see in My Account
On the Requests tab in My Account, patrons see the Renew request option when renewal is allowed for that loan. When renewal is not allowed, the option is hidden and a message explains why.

Configuration screen update
When Allow patrons to renew ILL requests online is selected, the Patron Settings screen includes the new renewal window options and informational text about pending and denied renewals. Clicking the Range of 1-30 days options will expand a drop down menu for you to select your desired number of days the button should appear before or after the due date.

If Allow patrons to renew ILL requests online is not selected, the new configuration options are hidden and the Renew button does not appear in My Account — same as before.
What has not changed
- Staff Interface renewal behavior is unchanged. Staff can request renewals for received items that have not been returned, including overdue items, subject to existing rules for pending and denied renewals
- If Allow patrons to renew ILL requests online is off, patron renewal behavior is unchanged
- Default settings (no days-before or days-after configuration) maintain current patron renewal behavior
- Copy requests are not affected — these settings apply to loan requests only
- WorldShare Interlibrary Loan libraries without My Account are not affected by these configuration options
Request API and custom integrations
My Account uses the OCLC Resource Sharing Request API for patron renewals. If your library uses a custom integration that lets patrons view or renew ILL loans through the Request API (outside My Account), review the updated API documentation for changes to renew eligibility and error responses.
GET responses may include reason codes in forbiddenUserActionReasons explaining why renew is not available:
- TOO_EARLY_FOR_RENEWAL — before your configured days-before window
- TOO_LATE_FOR_RENEWAL — after your configured days-after window, or after the patron due date when using the default
- PRIOR_RENEWAL_PENDING — a renewal is already pending
- PRIOR_RENEWAL_DENIED — a previous renewal was denied by the lender
UPDATE renew or cancel attempts that are not permitted now return failure code 140012 with a corresponding reason code in the error detail. Integrations that submit renew requests should handle these responses.
Patron renew rules follow your Patron Settings configuration. Staff renewal through the Staff Interface does not use these API rules. The SOAP API used by ILLiad is not affected by this release.
No action required
If you do not change the new Patron Settings options, patron renewal behavior remains the same as before this release. Libraries that want stricter or more flexible renewal windows can configure the new settings at any time.
