Create a user comment

Learn how to create a user comment from a blank workform, a DDC record, or an existing comment in WebDewey.

Create a user comment from a blank workform

  1. From the top navigation, click Comments.
  2. Click New Comment. A blank comment workform appears.  
  3. (Optional) In the DDC# field, enter the number (from the schedules, tables, or manual) to which the comment applies. A comment can be added without an associated number.
  4. For the Type of Comment field, select Institution, Personal or Public.
    • Site license - If you have a site license for WebDewey, the Type of Note field shows the default comment type you specified on the WebDewey Options screen. Change the type if desired.
    • Single-user license - If you have a single-user license for WebDewey, Personal Note is automatically selected.
  5. For the Title field, enter a title that indicates the subject or purpose of the comment.
  6. (Optional) For the Keywords field, enter one or more words that represent the subject or purpose of the comment. Include terms that you (or others) might use when searching for this comment.
  7. For the Comment field, enter the content for the comment.
  8. Proofread the comment and correct any errors.
  9. Add the comment to the notes database.
    DDC number check (new user comment)

    When you save a new user comment for the first time, the system searches the WebDewey database for the number you supplied in the DDC Number field of the user comment.

    If the number you supplied does not exist in the DDC database searched, the system asks you to decide whether or not to save the comment.
    1. Open the Actions list and click Save.
    2. Click OK to confirm that you want to save the comment. The system displays a confirmation message.
    • To save anyway, click Yes.
    • To cancel saving the comment and correct it as appropriate, click No.

Create a user comment from a DDC record

  1. Retrieve the DDC record you want to annotate.
  2. From the top navigation, click Comments.
  3. The system opens a new comments workform. The DDC# field contains the number represented by the DDC record.

    Brackets and parentheses not transferred. When you create a user comment for a DDC number surrounded by square brackets or parentheses, the number is inserted in the comment workform without the surrounding punctuation.
  4. Complete the new comment:
    1. Enter text to provide appropriate information or instructions.
    2. Complete the required fields: TitleType of Comment, and Comment.
    3. Proofread the comment and correct any errors.
  5. Add the comment to the notes database.
    1. Open the Actions list and click Save.
    2. Click OK to confirm that you want to save the comment. The system displays a confirmation message.

      When you retrieve the annotated DDC record, your comment appears in a box labeled Comments. Comments follow notes that are part of the DDC (labeled Notes).

    When you save a new user comment for the first time, the system searches the WebDewey database for the number you supplied in the DDC Number field of the user comment.

    If the number you supplied does not exist in the DDC database searched, the system asks you to decide whether or not to save the comment.
    • To save anyway, click Yes.
    • To cancel saving the comment and correct it as appropriate, click No.

Derive a user comment from an existing comment

  1. Search the comments database to retrieve the comment you want to use as a model for creating similar comments.
    Or
    Create a comment with characteristics you want to replicate in one or more other comments (a template comment).
  2. Click Derive.
  3. An exact copy of the original comment appears, in edit mode.
  4. Complete the new comment:
    1. Enter text to provide appropriate information or instructions.
    2. Complete the required fields: TitleType of Comment, and Comment.
    3. Proofread the comment and correct any errors.
  5. Add the comment to the comments database.
    1. Open the Actions list and click Save.
    2. Click OK to confirm that you want to save the comment. The system displays a confirmation message.

    DDC number check (new user comment)

    When you save a new user comment for the first time, the system searches the WebDewey database for the number you supplied in the DDC Number field of the user comment.
