Why am I seeing the error “Redirected Too Many Times”?
Symptom
-
Users receive a “redirected too many times” error when trying to access a CONTENTdm site.
Applies to
-
CONTENTdm
Possible Cause:
This error usually happens when someone (or an institutional system) opens the site using the HTTP version of the address. CONTENTdm automatically sends (redirects) HTTP traffic to the more secure HTTPS version. If something like a proxy, an old bookmark, a saved link, or cached browser data keeps sending the browser back to HTTP, it can get stuck in a loop and trigger the error.
Resolution
Caused by several factors such as :
Institutional proxy, firewall, library website, catalogue, or LibGuide OR Web browsers using saved cookies, cache, or bookmarkst will need tobe be checked :
-
Use the HTTPS address. Go directly to https://cdm1xxx5.contentdm.oclc.org.
-
Update saved and published links. Delete bookmarks that use HTTP, then update links on the library website, in catalogue records, in LibGuides, and in other distributed materials.
-
Clear site data. Clear cookies and cache for contentdm.oclc.org, then test the HTTPS address again.
-
Test the browser. Open the site in a private or incognito window. If needed, test another browser to determine whether the issue is caused by cached browser data.
Additional information
Determine Whether the Issue Is Institution-Specific
1. Test the HTTPS address on a device outside the institution’s network, such as a device using mobile data.
2. If the site works outside the network but redirects on the institution’s network, ask the institution’s IT network administrator to review proxy, firewall, and redirect rules.
3. If users access CONTENTdm through EZproxy or another campus proxy, confirm that the proxy configuration sends traffic to the HTTPS address and does not redirect it back
to HTTP.
