Can a shelving location simply be renamed?

Answer

It is not recommended to simply rename a shelving location, which would cause problems with the items' metadata. Instead of renaming, follow the steps below:

  1. Create a new shelving location as described in the following article: Where can I add or remove shelving locations?

  2. Update WMS Circulation policies
    Ensure that the new shelving location is included in all relevant circulation policies.

  3. Update local holdings data 
    Any local holdings still linked to the old shelving location must be reassigned to the new shelving location. You can update these records in bulk.

  4. Remove the old shelving location
    Once all updates are complete, you can remove the old shelving location from the holding codes translation table.
