Connexion client 1: Foundations of Connexion client

 

Description This course provides foundational knowledge about OCLC Connexion client software and the copy cataloging workflow. After completing this course, learners will have the foundational knowledge to use Connexion client as a copy cataloging tool and access help tools within Connexion client. Learners will also be able to navigate the program and set up Connexion client to begin a work session efficiently. Other courses in this series will build upon the information shared in this session.
 

 Note: OCLC strongly recommends viewing MARC Bibliographic Basics before taking this course. This video provides a brief introduction to the MARC bibliographic format.

Intended audience OCLC strongly recommends that newly assigned copy catalogers take Foundations of Connexion client, Bibliographic searching, and Record editing and processing in sequence. Together, these three modules provide the foundation of knowledge for newly assigned copy catalogers to work successfully with Connexion client.

Connexion client 2: Bibliographic searching 

 

Description This course provides instructions on how to use Connexion client to perform searches for bibliographic records in the WorldCat database.  After completing this course learners will be able to conduct searches for bibliographic records in WorldCat and evaluate whether a given record matches the item to be cataloged.
Intended audience This course is designed for learners who have little or no previous experience with Connexion client, and who may be new to library work. This course will be of particular benefit to new copy catalogers. It will also be beneficial to original catalogers who need to determine, before creating an original record, that no matching record exists.

Connexion client 3: Record editing and processing 

 

Description This course provides instruction on working with MARC bibliographic records in Connexion client, including using MARC field help, editing WorldCat records, updating WorldCat holdings, and exporting WorldCat records, as well as mechanics for replacing and creating WorldCat records.
Intended audience This course is intended for learners who are new to Connexion client and copy cataloging but have a basic familiarity with the MARC record. Established but basic users of Connexion may also benefit from the course by thoroughly reviewing the MARC record editing process and learning about enhanced functionality and record validation.

Connexion client 4: Save files and batch processing

 

Description This course provides instruction on using Connexion client to perform high volumes of searches and record actions using batch processing efficiency, including saving and managing Save Files. After completing this course, learners will know how to manage online and local save files effectively and will be able to enter and process batches of search keys and record actions.
Intended audience This course is intended for learners who already use Connexion client to do individual searches, set/delete holdings, and export records one at a time; but want to use Connexion client’s batch processing features to increase their efficiency in processing large numbers of records. This course will be of particular benefit to library staff members who use acquisitions or copy cataloging for large orders of materials or who process large numbers of holdings deletions. Supervisors who oversee these activities and manage workflows will also find it useful.

Connexion client 5: Automation and customization

 

Description This course provides instruction on using Connexion client tools to automate the entry of repetitive data and streamline repetitive or multi-step processes.  Attendees will learn about constant data, text strings, the toolbar editor, keymaps, user tools, and macros. After completing this course, learners will be prepared to create and use these tools to promote efficiency in their cataloging process.
Intended audience This course is intended for learners who are familiar with Connexion’s basic copy and/or original cataloging functions and are looking to make the process faster and easier. This course will be particularly beneficial for catalogers who do a significant amount of consistent editing or follow repetitive manual processes for copy or original cataloging.

Connexion client 6: Authority control

 

Description This course is intended for staff at OCLC member libraries that use Connexion client and who may be doing original or copy cataloging where they need to search, verify, and control headings in bibliographic records.
 

 Note: OCLC strongly recommends watching MARC authority records and reviewing Understanding MARC authority records before taking this course. The video  and documentation provide a brief introduction to the MARC authority records. 

Intended audience This course is intended for learners who have a basic understanding of cataloging principles and MARC, have some cataloging experience, and are comfortable with using Connexion client to search WorldCat, navigate through search results, and do basic editing. This course will be of particular benefit to catalogers who create original bibliographic records or do extensive editing of existing records, library staff who need to find and export authority records to provide cross-reference structures in their local catalog, and technical services managers who oversee these activities.
